Birthday Speeches – 5 Tips for Making a Good Speech

It can be very daunting when it comes to writing birthday speeches for someone else. If you’re like me, you might go blank when it comes to this topic. Thinking of the usual spiel of thanking everyone, saying happy birthday and hoping they enjoy their night can be boring for the audience and leave them yawning.

Here are 5 tips to make a good birthday speech

Use an example speech – Using an example speech gives you a better understanding of how to structure the content where you can swap and change the speech to personalise it so you can become your own. You can try put something together yourself though if it is something that you struggle with, why not find a proven recipe that could work for you?

Ensure the speech is engaging – Your aim is to ensure your birthday speech is engaging so you intrigue the audience into wanting to listen on. You would want to highlight the qualities of the person and incorporate a story or two which enhances those qualities which resonates with the audience of what that person is really about.

Add humor – Add some humor into the speech to captivate the audience and generate a few laughs to create a good vibe to the event. Not sure of what events to mention? Speak to close relatives and friends of the birthday person who can share some funny moments which have happened in the past. In the odd chance that you are unable to find any suitable ones, you could look up some one liners which may have relevance to the birthday person and tie them into your speech.

Show some sincerity – You want to ensure that you are being sincere and that you are making the birthday person feel special by saying some kind words.

Keep it to the point – The speech does not have to be long. Remember, people at a party usually have a short attention span, and even more so if they have been drinking. Keep it short and sweet, between 2-5 minutes is more than enough.

An example birthday speech could look something like this –

Can I have your attention. We are all here today to realise something special. Something so worthwhile to celebrate. Something fun, enjoyable and memorable. We have come here together to recognise and share in the joy this moment brings. I am talking about the open bar! Ha-Ha!

On a more serious note, I would like to draw your attention to one of my bestest of friends whose 21st birthday we are celebrating here tonight. I have known (Insert name) for more than 10 years and during that time, we have had many moments of fun, adventure and as many of you may know, mischief. Whenever together, we always seemed to find a way to get ourselves into trouble.

Just like the time we decided to play a trick on his mom by colouring in his younger brothers face an interesting shade of green. We took the time to make it look realistic and ensured it was with a permanent marker so it couldn’t be easily rubbed off. I remember the look on his mom’s face as she freaked out and rushed the brother to the hospital. After the doctor giving it the once over and explaining to his mom the cause of the problem. I remember her glaring at us in a trance like state. Lets just say I had never seen someones face go that red before. We both found it to be funny at the time though I don’t think he saw the light of day for at least a month after that incident. Ha-Ha

Anyone who knows him, knows that he will go out of his way to ensure everyone is having a laugh. Even at his own expense, he wants to ensure everyone is having a great time.

He has taken on many challenges and succeeded many times, not by chance. But by perseverance and heart. Anyone who knows (Insert name), knows he is full of heart.

So on this milestone may you continue to strive for all that you want and just wanted to let you know that I am grateful to have such a great friend like you. Happy Birthday.
