Tablets have been around for many years now. Many consumers and developers are still arguing about its uses and possible applications. It’s a debate that continues to exist as the giants of consumer mobile electronics manufacturers release a new model every year like Apple’s iPad. The idea behind these devices was to create a portable mobile device that can replace your laptop. From what we have seen over the years is that these devices are nothing more than a giant screen phone designed for media consumption.
The only real attempt to make such a device that can possibly replace a laptop was seen from the companies like Apple with their iPad Pro and Microsoft with their Surface series tablets. These companies branded their devices as they are focused on the idea of replacing a computer by providing robust hardware and operating system which promises to provide a similar functionality and support as Windows or MacOS operating systems.
Apple’s iPad has a larger share than Android tablet devices in the market, thanks to its customer’s dedication towards their products they have been able to reach a larger scale of product development. The release of a new iPad pro-2018 has confirmed that these new devices are taking a real shot at replacing laptops.
Looking at the old iPad the 2016 version of iPad pro was nothing more than a large screen version of simple iPad with a little hardware upgrade having the latest features of that time. If we say that the old versions of iPad pro were just giant screen iPhones is a completely fitting statement.
What has changed
A lot has changed since the release of the first iPad. The new iPad Pro 2018 is a lot more powerful and functional than its predecessors. It is focused on providing consumers with more functionality similar to laptops in an effort to replace them. It also provides more capabilities to the creators with the support of a new and improved Apple pencil.
It is a beast in terms of hardware having all the perks of latest and advanced technology Apple has to offer. It’s packing an Apple A12X bionic (7nm) octa-core chip with Apple GPU (7-core graphics) and 4GB ram. Having an all screen display with advanced face recognition feature and support for a new Apple Pencil. It also replaces ThunderBolt port with a USA type-C port.
The iPad Pro is having iOS 12 which is upgradeable to 12.1.
Apples iPad Pro has long been criticized because of its software which is iOS. As for a device that is designed to replace laptops iOS doesn’t provide enough functionality to the developers or power consumers. Apple also puts limitations to the hardware usage through software which limits the resources for the developers to use iPad up to its full potential. In spite of having all that power, the iOS does not allow the apps to complete access to the hardware resources which is a major issue. In terms of hardware iPad, Pro 2018 is more than capable of handling all the workload from power demanding apps but iOS is just isn’t as capable as MacOS in terms of providing full functionality and resources to the developers.
With the addition of USB type-C port Apple confirm that there will be a number of accessories available like different peripherals. It also comes with a new Apple’s folio keyboard cover.
All that latest hardware cramped into a giant device just increases its price. It is estimated at above 2000$ and it will cost you extra money to buy Apple pencil. From the price point of view, it’s not a very compelling choice as you can buy a reasonably powerful laptop without compromising anything in terms of software and functionality. As for the price point of view, iPads have always been an overpriced product but their usage in the market is substantially high because of the huge third-party app development trend in the developers. There are companies available which provide iPad rental services for short-term iPad hire at affordable rates.
